Axelle Red was born Fabienne Demal in Hasselt, Flanders, Belgium, on 15
February 1968. She is a singer-songwriter. Despite being Flemish, she chose
to write and perform songs in the French language. She has achieved great
critical success in both Belgium and France. Her musical style varies from
jazz to piano ballads.
Her musical idols as a youth were the pop group ABBA. She graduated in law
(her father is a lawyer) at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, but she
nevertheless felt more attracted to music, a passion of her mother (a
pianist). Her first album, Sans plus attendre, sold 500 000 copies in
Belgium alone (a record). The song "Sensualité" was her breakthrough hit in
France. Other hits included "Elle danse seule", "Je t'attends",
Manhattan-Kaboul, "Parce que c'est toi", and "I had a dream" (featuring
Daan). In 1998, she sang with Youssou N'Dour the official song of the 1998
FIFA World Cupduring the opening ceremony in Paris of
Tatons/Sans Plus Attendre
