Benjamin Gold (b. 1898, Moldova - d. July 24 1985, North Miami Beach, FL) was a leader in the International Fur and Leather Workers Union. Gold was born in Bessarabia, a province of the Russian Empire, and came to the United States in 1910. At the age of 14, he was a member of the committee that ran the first strike in the New York fur industry. In 1926, he led a 17-week fur strike that resulted in the 35-hour week. In 1933, under Gold's leadership, the furriers union joined the A.F. of L. He was elected president of the International Fur Workers Union in 1935. Under Gold's leadership, the union expanded to include organized leather workers and became the International Fur and Leather Workers Union in 1939. Political Career At the height of his career as a labor leader, Gold resided in the Bronx, where he ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 1928; State Assembly in 1930, 1931, and 1936.
