    Bertha "Chippie" Hill (born March 15, 1905 in Charleston, South Carolina; died May 7, 1950 in New York City, New York) was an American blues and vaudeville singer and dancer, best known for her recordings with Louis Armstrong. Career Hill came from a family of sixteen children in Charleston, South CarolinaPaul Oliver, in The Story of the Blues, suggests on the basis of one of her songs that she may instead have been born in Pratt City, Birmingham, Alabama, but in 1915 the family moved to New York. She began her career as a dancer in Harlem, and by 1919 was working as a dancer with Ethel Waters. At age 14, during a stint at Leroy's, a noted New York nightclub, Hill was nicknamed "Chippie" because of her young age.Santelli, Robert.
