Dan Carlin is a podcaster operating out of Eugene, Oregon, who is the host of popular podcasts
Common Sense and
Hardcore History.
Introduction
For more than a dozen years, the 41-year-old radio talk show host has been pushing the idea that the two main political parties in the United States are a large part of the problem, rather than the solution to our governmental and societal dilemmas.
In addition to pushing what he calls a "neo-prudentist" view of things, Carlin brings history into the mix and uses it to help analyze problems and craft solutions.
Carlin broke into the television news business in Los Angeles in the late 1980s. He's been a television news reporter, an author, a columnist, and for the last dozen years, a radio talk show host. No longer broadcasting on terrestrial radio, Carlin has achieved notoriety in recent years in the so-called "new media"-- internet radio, podcasting, and the blogosphere. Currently, he hosts two popular podcasts, both of which are frequently among the highest-ranked podcasts on review sites such as podcastalley.com and iTunes.
Common Sense
Common Sense is an amalgam of several Dan Carlin hosted radio programs that aired between 1994 and 2004. The shows highlighted his independent political views and his sense of humor. The current podcast now riffs on global news and current events. Both sides of the political spectrum are subject to blistering criticism (and occasional praise.)
Hardcore History
Hardcore History, the more popular of the two podcasts, is Carlin's forum for exploring various situations and events throughout world history. Topics vary widely from show to show-- Carlin is as comfortable discussing the causes of the Bronze Age collapse as he is the social implications of World War I.
Fun Facts
- On Common Sense, Carlin sometimes makes reference to his producer "Ben" and his various obscure diseases, which he often claims can only be cured by listener donations, votes and reviews.
- Carlin once claimed to not be allowed to have a morning show on radio anymore due to the fact he once deposited onions from hamburgers he consumed in every trash barrel in the station.
- Carlin is often noted for his unique and dynamic cadence. A reviewer once described his radio voice as "an unholy mixture of Rush Limbaugh, Kermit the Frog, and Wallace Shawn." One listener described his voice as what the child of Richard Dreyfus would sound like if he tried to impersonate Christopher Walken.
- Carlin is the son of Academy Award nominated actress Lynn Carlin and film producer Ed Carlin.
