Gda?sk (Polish IPA ); ), also known historically by the German name () and several other names, is the sixth-largest city in Poland. Situated in the north of the country, it is Poland's principal seaport as well as the capital of the Pomeranian Voivodeship. It is also the largest city of the Cassubia region, however, through centuries it has forgotten about its "cassubianity" due to development and changes the city has been always experiencing because of its location and port functions. The city lies on the southern coast of Gda?sk Bay (of the Baltic Sea), in a conurbation with the spa town of Sopot, the city of Gdynia and suburban communities, which together form a metropolitan area called "greater Gda?sk" and the Tricity (Trójmiasto) with a population of over a million people.
