    Epistrophy
Epistrophy is a jazz standard composed by Thelonious Monk and Kenny Clarke in 1942. It has been called "the first classic, modern jazz composition."[LINK: http://links.jstor.org/sici?sici=0090-7790(1990)18%3A1%2F2%3C39%3AMJDA%3E2.0.CO%3B2-A] [1] Anthony Brown, "Modern Jazz Drumset Artistry," The Black Perspective in Music, Vol. 18, No. 1/2 (1990), pp. 39-58 Its 'A' section is based on a pattern of alternating chords a semitone apart. As such, it is far removed from most of the jazz compositions of its day, even those composed by other Bebop musicians. References Songs by Thelonious MonkJazz standards
