    The Winter of Frankie Machine is a 2006 novel written by Don Winslow. Plot summary The story is about a retired San Diego mafia hitman. His name is Frank Machianno and he cut his ties with the mafia many years back. However one day the Los Angeles Boss call's in for a past favor. Frank must oversee a meeting between the Detroit Combination and the Los Angeles crime family. However it is a scheme to kill Frankie. Someone from Frank's past wants to kill him and he has to find out why, how and when. The list of candidates is about the size of a phone book and he is rapidly running out of time. Film adaptation In November 2005, prior to the publishing of The Winter of Frankie Machine, interest in a film adaptation was expressed by Tribeca Films and actor Robert De Niro.
