Gene Summers was born in Dallas, Texas and is an American
singer/entertainer who has been an active rock/rockabilly recording artist
since the 1950s. He graduated from Duncanville High School (Texas) in 1957
and attended Arlington State College (now known as University of Texas at
Arlington) that same year. In 1957 he formed a rockabilly music group "The
Rebels". The band included Summers-vocalist/guitar, James McClung-lead
guitar, Gary Moon-drums and Benny Williams-slap bass. Their first
television program was "Joe Bill's Country Picnic" in late 1957 on KRLD-TV,
Dallas. It was while appearing on this weekly program that they were
spotted by songwriter Jed Tarver. Tarver, who wrote songs under his wife's
name-Mary Tarver, brought the band to the attention of Jan Records. Jan was
a new record label owned by Dallas oilman Thomas H. Fleeger. Fleeger liked
the band and signed them on-the-spot. Gene Summers & His Rebels' first
record was released in February,
