Biography


Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers (SCAP) was the title for General Douglas MacArthur during the Occupation of Japan following World War II. Although there were and are other Supreme Allied Commanders, the SCAP title per se has only ever been given to MacArthur. MacArthur had a belief in that his - and by proxy the American ? presence as Supreme Commander was a holy one. During his speech which he gave on the deck of his warship following the signing of the unconditional surrender, he stated that ?The holy mission has been completed.?Dower (1999) p. 41 In Japan, the position was generally referred to as GHQ (General Headquarters), as SCAP also referred to the offices of the occupation, including a staff of several hundred U.S. civil servants as well as military personnel.
