Gloria Jones (born 12 September 1938, Longview, Texas [LINK:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1808224/bio] [1]) is an American singer and
songwriter. She recorded the 1964 northern soul classic, "Tainted Love",
later a hit for the British synth-pop duo, Soft Cell.
Career Jones' entry into the music industry followed the same pattern of
many African American artists. She was the daughter of a minister and
studied classical piano for ten years, before joining a gospel group
singing in church which included amongst others, future stars such as
Billy Preston. At the same time she also sang backing vocals for Phil
Spector and Bob Dylan. Eventually she was to meet a future writing partner
Pam Sawyer, who asked her to write for Motown Records. Jones and Sawyer
were amongst the second string of writers at Motown but still wrote for
such artists as Gladys Knight & the Pips, Commodores, The Four Tops and
The Jackson 5.
