Begun in August 2005, HKZ is an hour-long weekly podcast devoted to
featuring avant-garde, experimental, and new music by undiscovered, rarely
discovered or lesser-known artists and bands. In each episode, one artist
and/or album is featured by playing about four or five tracks. Each
selection is accompanied by explanatory "liner-note" material, such as a
biography of the artist or band, the inspiration for the track, a send-up
of the art on the release, and the like. The featured material usually
gets a little more background information provided, pulled from reliable
sources or the releases themselves.
Hosted by J. Everett R., the show is reportedly based on CBC Radio 2's
radio show Brave New Waves, hosted by Patti Schmidt. Those familiar with
Brave New Waves will hear the resemblance when they listen to HKZ. HKZ's
host's name is a take on the common practice of official naming, as in
"John Q. Public", but instead, the first and last names have
