Hot Rize is a bluegrass band that rose to prominence in the early 1980s,
consisting of Tim O'Brien on mandolin and fiddle, Pete Wernick on banjo,
Nick Forster on electric bass. It also had Charles Sawtelle on guitar until
his 1999 death.
Three years later, Bryan Sutton joined the band to play the guitar.
Hot Rize has appeared on national radio and TV shows, and have toured most
of the United States, as well as Japan, Europe and Australia.
An entertaining part of their show is to all swap instruments and dress up
as an imaginary Western swing band called Red Knuckles and the
Trailblazers.
The band takes its name from the leavening ingredient found in Martha
White flour and cornmeal products. Interestingly enough, during their
concerts, Hot Rize will often perform the theme song to the then defunct
Martha White Biscuit and Cornbread Time, giving credence to the fact that
they are named for the ingredient in the song. Flatt and
