    Judas Iscariot (died April AD 29–33, ) was, according to the New Testament, one of the twelve original apostles of Jesus. Among the twelve, he was apparently designated to keep account of the "money bag" (Grk. ???????????),, but he is most traditionally known for his role in Jesus' betrayal into the hands of Roman authorities., , , , , , , Etymology In the Greek New Testament, Judas Iscariot is called ?????? ???????? (Ioúdas Iskári?th) and ?????????? (). "Judas" (spelled "Ioudas" in ancient Greek and "Iudas" in Latin, in both) is the Greek form of the common name Judah (?????, Y^ehûdâh, Hebrew for "God is praised"). The same Greek spelling underlies other names in the New Testament that are traditionally rendered differently in English: Judah and Jude. The precise significance of "Iscariot," however, is uncertain. There are two major theories on its etymology:
