Legende (1906) A solo work for trumpet and piano, composed by George Enescu
(1881-1955) and premiered by Merri Franquin (1848-1934), professor of
cornet at the Paris Conservatoire. This piece reflects the impressionistic
style of Enesco's teachers Jules Massenet and Gabriel Fauré. The title is
an homage to Professor Franquin and the collaboration between the two in
this composition reflect an important step in the evolution of the trumpet
from a more archaic limited instrument, to a fully chromatic and soloistic
instrument. The composition contains both lyrical flowing lines and
technical passages that show the versatility of the newly designed
chromatic C trumpet. Legende now holds an important place in the trumpet
repertoire and is considered one of the most beautiful pieces available in
a somewhat limited modern repertoire.
