He has been a member of the Socialist Workers Party since his late teens. Early life Steel grew up in Swanley, Kent, in the late 1970s. His anger and frustration at society's injustices were vented by political protests, punk rock and poetry. He was expelled from [LINK: http://www.swanley.kent.sch.uk] Swanley Comprehensive School, on St Mary's Road, for attending a cricket course at the age of 15, and went on to work in a garage and then live in a squat with his old friend Mick Hannan.
