Modena City Ramblers is an Italian Folk band founded in 1991. Its members always declare their love for folk and Ireland. In composing their songs, they add some international traditional riffs. Even the origin of these songs is unknownMassimo "Ice" Ghiacci in Non sono solo canzonette. The band has sold over 500,000 albums. Known for their left-wing politics, their Lyrics speak out against the Mafia and Fascism.

Biography

The formation and the growing

The Modena City Ramblers (also M.C.R.) were formed in 1991 by some friends that wanted to play traditional Irish music.The first to join were "Albertone" Morselli, Giovanni Rubbiani and "Albertino"' Cottica (still in Lontano da dove), Chris Dennis (ex Nomadi), Filippo Chieli, Franchino D'Aniello and Luciano Gaetani from Abazia dei folli. On the 17 March 1991, Saint Patrick's Day, during a concert in a pub in Modena, they chose the name Modena City Ramblers: an homage to Dublin City Ramblers, an Irish band, without forgetting their Emilian roots.Alberto Morselli in his biography. Probably the name derives from American folk band New Lost City Ramblers, born in 1958 in New York.

In 1992 they were joined by the bassist Massimo Ghiacci (ex Plutonium 99). During the evening of 1 Marzo they recorded their first demo On the first day of march...Live demo. During a concert at Kalinka, a pub in Carpi, Stefano "Cisco" Bellotti sang The Wild Rover for the first time.Stefano "Cisco" Bellotti in Clan Banlieue - 12 years of songs , concerts, interviews, journeys, videos. At this time the Modena City Ramblers became an open company, and have remained so during throughout MCR's history, with almost all members who have left the band, with the exception of Alberto Morselli, returning sporadically to play with the group.Their most famous concert was performed as the opening act for the Pogues in Modena. Their repertoire has since expanded considerably, including traditional Italian songs as Bella ciao, Fischia il vento, Contessa.

Formation

From years to years many changes for the band formers happened Tree, left orphaned after the first album by singer Alberto Morselli: in 1996 joined the band Francesco Moneti to replace Marco Michelini; in 2001 left the project Giovanni Rubbiani and Alberto Cottica, too, authors of many lyric.Fourteen years later, in 18 november 2005, singer Stefano "Cisco" Bellotti left the band, leaving MCR without a front-man. The new set up, shown in 27 January 2006, is formed by:

  • Davide "Dudu" Morandi: singer, bass, acoustic and electric guitar, banjo, glockenspiel, harmonica
  • Betty Vezzani: singer, acoustic and electric guitar, tambourine, mandolin
  • Massimo "Ice" Ghiacci: acoustic and electric bass, double bass, tea-chest bass, saxTour 2008, choirs, acoustic guitar
  • Franco D'Aniello: flute, tin whistle, trumpet, sax, choirs, acoustic guitar, glockenspiel, percussion
  • Francesco "Fry" Moneti: acoustic and electric guitar, acoustic, electric and indian violin, banjo, oud, mandolin, choirs, vox
  • Roberto Zeno: drums, percussions, choirs, mandolin, acoustic guitar and piano
  • Arcangelo "Kaba" Cavazzuti: drums, percussions, acoustic guitar, bass, charango, piano, trumpetTour 2008 Image, shaker, banjo, choirs, vox
  • Luca "Gabibbo" Giacometti (died in Rubiera on the night in 6 October 2007 by a car accident): bouzouki, mandolin, banjo, acoustic guitar, choirs, vox

Trivia

  • Several of the Ramblers' songs, such as "Cent'anni di solitudine", "Macondo Express", and "Remedios la Bella" seem to be inspired by One Hundred Years of Solitude.
  • The song "Il bicchiere dell'addio" - from the album "Riportando tutto a casa" - saw the participation of the Irish singer Bob Geldof.
  • Ramblers made their own version of "The great song of Indifference" written in Emilian dialect, inspired by the homonym Bob Geldof's song.
  • The version of Bella Ciao! played in one of the latest albums, "Appunti Partigiani", was played with the collaboration of the Serbian singer, Goran Bregovic.
