Samain (one variant of the Celtic Irish word for Hallowe'en or the last
night of the year) was a progressive black metal band from Perth, Western
Australia that disbanded in 1999 under the direction of co-founder Warren
Hately. Various articles about Samain and its influence on other bands,
particularly those of a pagan, folkloric or Celtic character, can be found

Early History Samain began life at the very end of 1992 under the name
Nazgul, itself a Lord of the Rings reference. Conrad Kuntz (drums) and Nick
Bell (guitars) had advertised for a bassist/vocalist and Warren Hately was
the only respondent. Nazgul disintegrated very quickly and Bell and Hately
decided to keep playing in early 1993 after one of drummer Kuntz's many
