    Samain (one variant of the Celtic Irish word for Hallowe'en or the last night of the year) was a progressive black metal band from Perth, Western Australia that disbanded in 1999 under the direction of co-founder Warren Hately. Various articles about Samain and its influence on other bands, particularly those of a pagan, folkloric or Celtic character, can be found on the web. Early History Samain began life at the very end of 1992 under the name Nazgul, itself a Lord of the Rings reference. Conrad Kuntz (drums) and Nick Bell (guitars) had advertised for a bassist/vocalist and Warren Hately was the only respondent. Nazgul disintegrated very quickly and Bell and Hately decided to keep playing in early 1993 after one of drummer Kuntz's many notorious fits of pique saw him quit music.
