    "The Little Mermaid" (Den lille havfrue) is a fairy tale by the Danish poet, travel writer, short story writer, and novelist Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875). Written in 1836, and first published April 7, 1837, the story is about a young mermaid willing to give up her life in the sea and her identity as a merperson to gain a human soul and the love of a human prince. The tale is one of Andersen's most popular and has seen opera, ballet, musical theater, puppet theater, and animated film adaptations. The tale is regularly featured in selected tales collections of Andersens' work and is frequently published in illustrated storybook editions for children.
