Yerba Buena (Clinopodium douglasii) is a sprawling aromatic herb of the western and northwestern United States, western Canada and Alaska and Mexico. The plant takes the form of a sprawling, mat-forming perennial, and is especially abundant close to the coast. Name The plant's common name, the same in English and Spanish, is an alternate form of the Spanish hierba buena (meaning "good herb") was given it by the pioneer Catholic priests of Alta California. When in 1776 those priests founded Mission San Francisco de Asís (or "Mission Dolores") on the eastern side of the San Francisco peninsula, the plant was so abundant that it gave its name to the settler's town adjacent to the mission that eventually grew up to become the city of San Francisco. 1n 1850, three years after the young town was renamed San Francisco after the
